Online travel agencies bring hotels a steady flow of guests, but every booking through them comes with a commission. For many properties, even a small shift from OTA bookings to direct bookings makes a real difference to margins, and gives the hotel a direct relationship with the guest.
Guests often check a hotel’s own website before booking, even when they found it on an OTA. What they find there decides whether they book direct or go back to the travel site. Here’s what makes the difference.
1. Make the website fast, especially on phones
Most travellers browse on their phones, often on patchy connections. A slow homepage filled with heavy image sliders loses them before they see a single room.
- Compress every photo and serve modern formats such as WebP.
- Avoid auto-playing sliders and heavy video backgrounds on mobile.
- Keep the booking button visible without scrolling.
Speed also matters for Google, which uses page experience as one of many signals in its results.
2. Show rooms the way guests want to see them
Guests book rooms, not buildings. Every room type deserves its own section or page with:
- Several good photos, including the bathroom and the view.
- Size, bed type, occupancy and key amenities.
- What’s included, such as breakfast, Wi-Fi or airport pickup.
- A clear “Check availability” or “Book now” button.
Be honest in photos. A disappointed guest is more expensive than a lost booking.
3. Make booking effortless
The booking path should take as few steps as possible. Connect your website to a reliable booking engine, so guests can check dates, see rates and pay in one place. Show the total price clearly, including taxes, before the final step, because surprises at checkout are a common reason people leave.
Give guests a reason to book direct: a small perk such as a welcome drink, flexible cancellation, a room upgrade when available, or the best available rate on your own site.
4. Offer a quick way to ask questions
Many guests have one question before they book: is parking available, can you arrange a cab, is the pool open in winter? If the answer takes a day, they book elsewhere.
- Show a click-to-call number and a WhatsApp button on every page.
- Add a clear FAQ page for common questions.
- Consider an AI assistant that answers common questions instantly and collects enquiry details at any hour, handing over to your reservations team when needed.
5. Get found on Google Maps and local search
Travellers search for things like “hotels near Jaipur airport” or “heritage hotel in Jaipur”. These searches show a map with a handful of properties before the regular results.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete, with accurate categories, amenities, photos and your website link.
- Encourage happy guests to leave reviews, and reply to every review professionally.
- Make sure your name, address and phone number are identical on your website, your profile and every listing.
Our local SEO work focuses on exactly these details.
6. Help search engines understand your hotel
Structured data using the Hotel type tells search engines your address, star rating, amenities, check-in times and more in a format they read directly. It supports your visibility in Google and in AI-generated answers, and it’s quick to add to a well-built site.
7. Create pages for why people visit
Guests don’t only search for hotels; they search for reasons to travel. Pages about weddings and events, corporate stays, nearby attractions or seasonal packages can bring visitors who haven’t chosen where to stay yet. Each page should lead naturally to rooms and booking.
8. Measure direct bookings
You can’t improve what you don’t measure. Set up Google Analytics 4 with booking and enquiry tracking, so you can see how many guests book direct, which pages they come from and which campaigns work. Review it monthly alongside your OTA figures.
Bringing it together
A hotel website that wins direct bookings is fast, honest, easy to book and easy to find. None of these steps are complicated on their own, but together they change how many guests choose to book with you rather than through a travel site.
We have built websites for hotels including the Dangayach Group’s properties, such as Ramada Jaipur and Chomu Palace Hotel. If you’d like your hotel website reviewed, see our website design and development service or get in touch for a free review.
